The San Francisco restaurant had remained closed throughout the pandemic.

The chef-owner shared the news in a lengthyon Friday where he detailed his frustration about trying to reopen the fine-dining restaurant. “Next month Coi will turn 16. Sadly it won’t be sweet, and we won’t be open to celebrate,” Patterson wrote in part.

Coi went dark throughout the two-year pandemic and didn’t reopen, even after many fine-dining restaurants in the cityor eventually reopened for indoor dining. According to Patterson, Coi faced roadblocks after investors, who took over the restaurant in 2019, “refused” to let him reopen. “I tried everything,” Patterson wrote. “When the Michelin Guide included Coi in the most recent guide I thought that might change their minds. I proposed a remodel and to reopen with a fresh vibe, but they still said no. It breaks my heart to lose a restaurant I put so much love and so much of my life into.”

Coi was among the Bay Area restaurants that earned two Michelin stars in 2021, despite its temporary closure. The famous restaurant had likewise amassed various accolades over the years, beginning with twofollowing its debut two years earlier. By 2017, Coi was bestowed a third star under chef Matthew Kirkley, but eventually lost the honor.
