I took a rare (and affordable) trip to one of the most scenic parts of the west coast

The Yurok tribe has launched a fledgling canoe tour business. The first tours, delayed a year by the pandemic, are now open to those looking to experience quality time in nature while also learning about Yurok culture.

The Yurok population, the old-growth redwood forest, the river’s salmon fishery — all were reduced to fractions of what they had been.

Paddling “is all about connecting with the water, the weather and the wind,” said Yurok guide Sammy Gensaw. “You’re not just driving a redwood canoe.” When you calculate the cost of buying, transporting, storing and carving a redwood canoe, Sammy Gensaw told me, “These are $100,000 boats.”
