To mark King Charles III's upcoming coronation, OK! lived like a royal and paid a visit to some of the hotels that the monarch likes to stay at when travelling across the UK
With royal engagements taking place all across the globe, members of the royal family live a rather jetset lifestyle. From meet and greets in Scotland to state visits to Germany, King Charles III ’s role as monarch has taken him to various countries in recent months where he has met people from all different walks of life.
With walls adorned with photos of the late Queen’s coronation in 1953, interiors which are polished but inviting, and with light from the gardens shining through the enormous Georgian windows, enjoying the offerings in the hotel’s dining room feels relaxed rather than stifling. Unlike some hotels, the decadence and detail didn’t stop at the foyer. I literally gasped when I saw my suite, with its textured walls, sparkling ornate mirrors and an art collection that included an enormous portrait of a duke who towered over me grandly – and that was just the sitting room. In the bedroom, the original oak four poster was so high it came with antique steps – perfect for clambering into bed after a very decadent dinner.
As passers-by stared and waved at us en route, we imagined how it must feel to be an actual royal, such as the Princess of Wales. Usually saved for weddings or visiting politicians, the vintage cars will be available to rent during the coronation – royal wave at the ready… This is a walk back in time, and if you’ve seen The Crown you will be in familiar surroundings – an exact replica of the ship was used during the filming of season five.
The Fife Arms in Braemar is an entirely unique mix of Highland tradition and modern art, with reminders of its royal connections throughout. A Picasso hangs casually above a chesterfield facing a roaring wood fire, an American light installation sits above the oak concierge desk, Schiaparelli portraits hang in the cocktail bar and Scottish landscapes painted by the King – all set against the Fife Arms’ own tartan – line the halls.
