Those of us working in the NHS right now enter work with dread in the pit of our stomachs ✒️ DrPunamKrishan for ipaperviews
I’ve been a doctor for 17 years, and I remember working in an NHS that looked very different to what it does today. You’d think with progression of time and advancement in technology, the delivery of care would follow suit but unfortunately, this has not happened. The NHS is on its knees and in need of urgent help if it is to stand a chance of surviving. Everyday I look around and I struggle to find anyone happy in medicine. This breaks my heart.
Not only does it feel scary to be a patient, perhaps the worst feeling of all is being scared as a doctor. Those of us working in the NHS right now enter work with dread in the pit of our stomachs. Yes, a touch of adrenaline is healthy, and as doctors we are used to working under high levels of stress, pressures, demands and unpredictability but the kind of anxiety we all face now – before, during and after our shifts – is taking a toll.
I don’t have a solution. My job right now, like every other healthcare worker in the country, is to turn up and do the best I can that day for my patients – while somehow staying well. The latter is perhaps becoming the toughest thing as my mental and emotional wellbeing is suffering., but it is breaking the very people working on the frontline.
