🗣 What happened to my daughter is a lesson in not knowing what is around the corner.
In August 2019, my life changed overnight. It was early evening on a sunny, bank holiday weekend. I was at home when I received a phone call from my daughter’s friend, saying she had been taken to hospital. My daughter had been driving home with her friend, after a day out at a lido – and was about 50 miles from home. She started to feel unwell, describing it as the ‘worst headache ever’, and pulled over to the side of the road.
Seeing her like this was kind of surreal; we couldn’t believe it had happened. I think I was quite numb and I was tearful; I really didn’t know what the outcome would be at that stage. I didn’t know if she would survive and how we would manage the next few days, weeks or months. I kept asking myself what would we tell her daughter if the worst happened.
We were advised by her consultant that she would recover, but it’s been three years, and she’s still working hard to get her mobility back. I think partly due to Covid and lockdown, when there were no rehabilitation services, this has taken longer than it might have done. My day job is challenging mentally and physically, and I have to help my daughter dress and shower and try to help her mobility. We also look after her daughter quite a lot.I’m in a job where I’m regularly expected to work with the public, so I can’t just pop out or drop things as easily as some others. The thought of it makes me feel tired and worried. I don’t know if I have saved enough for everything to be OK. I need to check if I have, but I don’t understand it well enough.
My life is a cycle of going to work, caring for my daughter and granddaughter, and I do outdoor swimming. That’s it. I don’t go off on expensive foreign holidays; I’ve only got a small car, and we hardly ever eat out. The money just won’t stretch that far.As a result, I am one of the 50% of older women that Workingwise.co.uk revealed will keep working into retirement.
