“The best experience is when you have someone sitting down and they’re kind of grumpy and a bit upset, and then you get to interact with them and talk with them and brighten their day,” he said. “And then, when they see the artwork, they just can’t stop laughing.”Joanne Sirota serves up some bread at the Dukhobour house at the Saskatoon EX.Joanne Sirota’s family has been serving Doukhobor bread at the Ex for decades.

“Some days, you get people coming in saying, ‘I need 20 loaves, because I’m buying for all my friends.’ Or people stand in line just waiting for the bread to be baked. Or people who say, ‘I’ve been coming for 25 years to buy your bread.’ ”Photo by Michelle BergWhen Wil Denhertog comes to the Ex, she brings friends, including a very affectionate monitor lizard and a snuggly boa constrictor named Goodhold.

But for the high school teacher from Prince Albert, working the Ex is more than just a way to fill a week.Mourot likes to think she learned all the best fairground tricks from her parent. The most important one they taught her, she says, is to “just be nice.”“There’s a lot of transferrable skills: patience, and trying to make everything fun.”
