Female friends often asked whether I had veered into eating disorder territory as well. At times, it felt like they could handle all of my changes if I came out the other side with an eating disorder. Otherwise the transformation was too annoying and smug . When my best friend had concerns, I was open to the feedback because it was given with love, but when it was acquaintances? It felt more like trolling.
By far the worst comments were online. Even while I was constantly starting conversations by posting updates and pictures, I felt like my body shouldn’t be open for discussion – but, clearly, it was. Privately, some people would DM me to congratulate me , as well as to ask me about the ins and outs of Noom. I spent a long time on my responses – mostly because I knew what it was like to secretly and desperately want to break free from the cycles of eating and shame.
The majority of people, though, were significantly less kind. The comments on the Noom ad, all from women, were horrific. I was wearing pink/red wrap dresses in both my before and after pictures, and tons of people exclaimed that it wasn’t even the same dress and that I was not a real person. Other commentators said I looked much better in the before pic.
The worst comment was someone writing that I was obviously pregnant in the first picture. The reason this cut so deeply is that I had experienced people laying their hands on my belly and asking when I was due before . This happened once in a business meeting. Even typing that out all these years later has just made me cry. The thousands of paper cuts of humiliation a fat woman experiences daily would shock you. There are a million sneers and microaggressions.
