💬 I kept a time diary for a week to try to make me more productive - it worked but I felt guilty

Could a Marie Kondo time diary make me more productive? I tried for a week, it worked but I felt guilty

Kurashi is a Japanese word meaning “way of life” or “the ideal way in which we can spend our time each day”. Kondo’s method encourages us to think about the values we want to live by – about what matters to us – and then change our daily habits to accommodate this, adopting rituals that make us happier and more productive, and, through keeping a daily timesheet, work out what is stopping us from achieving kurashi.

As you might expect from the leader of the Kondo empire, the description of her own time-wasting is aspirational. Instead of doomscrolling or making endless cups of procrastination tea, she divulges that she spends too much time on her “joy scrapbook” – a leather-covered book in which she pastes images that delight her, designed to help realise her “childhood dream of curling up in bed with a cup of tea and a book of gorgeous pictures”.

Working out your values isn’t easy, nor does it feel very British. Kondo, who now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their three children, clearly thinks about this stuff daily. For the rest of us, values tend to reveal themselves at life’s pressure points. The pandemic prompted a reassessment for many and sparkedmoved out of cities, seeking a quieter rural life
