'I heard 999 calls going unanswered' ⬇️ What it was like to work during the paramedic strike
Tom previously worked as a frontline NHS paramedic for seven years but he left to work for a private events company instead due to the pressure and immense workload piled upon NHS staff.
“In the seven years I worked frontline with the NHS, I definitely had two breakdowns in the workplace where I then had to take time off,” he toldWhile he was “really saddened” to leave the NHS workforce, he felt that his skills were not valued and he was already doing shifts with a private healthcare provider on the side of his full-time job to top up his salary.would help NHS workers “feel more valued”. However, he said the strike is also about working conditions and patient safety.
Another paramedic called Jacob – whose name has also been changed – said a pay rise in line with inflation would make a “massive difference” to ambulance staff. However, he also said the strike is about working conditions as well as pay. His job now involves waiting in hospital corridors with patients as there are no beds and attending calls for people who have been waiting for over 24 hours.
“Yes, it is about pay but it’s also about us trying to do our best for our patients because the system is broken,” he toldHe continued: “People are dying anyway with the service in the condition that it’s in. I work on a fast-response car. And I’m going to people that have called 12 to 18 hours prior to me receiving the call.”elderly or vulnerable patient who had called 24 hours earlier due to suffering a fall.“It’s horrible.
