ISIS recruiter Awso Peshdary says he’s ashamed for betraying his family and the Muslim community for his dark descent into violent extremism

“It undermined the fabric of safety held by the general population … I know I have betrayed my family’s expectations of me. I have also failed the Muslim community by being involved in things that are contrary to Islamic values,” Peshdary told court. In sentencing submissions by his defence lawyer, Solomon Friedman noted the words of Peshdary’s sister, notably that her brother was addicted to jihad. Born in 1990, Ottawa’s Peshdary was obsessed with conspiracy and violent ideology.

In a victim-impact statement read into court, Maguire’s mother said there’s nothing quite like losing a son this way. She’s avoided once-happy occasions and Thanksgiving is especially hard because it’s so close to her son’s birthday. The judge agreed to a joint submission by the defence and federal Crown, and sentenced Peshdary for 21 more months. The actual sentence was 14 years, but after spending eight years awaiting trial at the notorious Ottawa jail, Peshdary was credited for his pre-custody time and has just under two years to serve. If he continues to be a model inmate, he is expected to make parole in a year.

At sentencing on Thursday, Friedman noted an expert’s report on Peshdary. Elaine Pressman, a world authority on violent extremism risk assessment, said Peshdary’s risk to re-offend is low, and noted he now has personal relationships with folks of other faiths.Article contentThe judge said she hoped that Peshdary — groomed by radicals at 16 — was being sincere when he denounced jihad and twice wished him all the best with his new start in life.
