TV producer Gabriella Incalza, 47, wants to see conversations about miscarriage normalised
The double Olympic gold medallist revealed last month that she was expecting but was given the news during a routine scan at 20 weeks.after suffering three miscarriages in her 40s. The 47-year-old TV producer, from Bedford, says that despite the pain of her losses, she’s glad she shared her pregnancy news early on because she feels it normalisesI’d never really thought about having a family before; I just wasn’t in the right relationship. Then I met and fell in love with Okey at 40.
Okey suggested we wait until I was 12 weeks gone before we told people. But I thought, why wait? We were so excited and I wanted to share our good news so we announced it straight away. I excitedly downloaded all the apps and was trying to learn everything about becoming aI had to then tell people that I’d lost the baby. I didn’t regret having shared the news early. It meant that we were able to get the support we needed from our loved ones.
And so, eventually, I stopped fretting, embraced this new pregnancy and started thinking about a possible life with a child. I thought maybe this is “third time lucky”. I had all the symptoms under the sun, I was really nauseous, which made it feel so real. The procedure was delayed and I had to stay overnight. The nurse told me they were busy but said I should ring the alarm if anything happens. At around 2am I started bleeding. But no one came.
I’ve accepted not becoming a mother. Okey and I did get excited about being parents. But I’m content and satisfied with the life I have. I love my job and we can. I know you can do these things with a child of course, but we get to be a bit more self-centred.
