When it was census time, we filled it in one after the other. I saw that he checked bisexual. This finally confirmed what I already believed. I knew that he had been admonished by his stepdad when he was young for playing with “girls” toys’ and he had talked about feeling stifled as a child, and that he never felt like he could be his true self.
I blurted out that I was confused about his sexuality. I brought up his clothing, his secret books and magazines. He explained that he just found the gay experience interesting. He said it is so different from the traditional male experience, which he said he never identified with. He felt different from the typical “alpha male”. He apologised for not explaining anything. We didn’t talk about it again for ages but for a while, I felt better for knowing more.
