Prosopagnosia has caused former teacher, Jane Green, difficulties over the years, not least the inability to recognise her students. And the condition is not as rare as you might think
. “At school, I wasn’t very academic and left at 16 with no qualifications. The teachers probably thought I was a bit dim, and there was no support available,” she says. She later gained a master’s degree in education.
Green finds it “discombobulating” being in crowds as there are so many faces, and when watching TV, following a drama with many characters can be challenging. “I can recognise the faces of close family in photographs if they’re presented to me, but some people have a more severe form and aren’t able to do that,” she explains.Indeed, a case study presented in a psychology research journal recorded
. Researchers tested the woman’s ability to evaluate emotions, intentions, and the attractiveness and likeability of faces. This revealed typical brain activity patterns for faces and normal object recognition skills, and no evidence of any brain injury. But compared with a group of matched controls, the woman showed “severe deficits” in learning new faces, and in recognising familiar faces when only inner features were visible.
