The comedian now understands why so many people got upset about his old homophobic remarks
is issuing a mea culpa. If you’ll recall, in 2018, Hart was tapped to host the upcoming 2019 Oscar ceremony—then stepped down afterof his were resurfaced, causing some to question the Academy’s selection. Hart initially doubled down, refusing to apologize for his old jokes until he formally announced he would no longer host the show—and reacting to his critics with defiance even after being publicly urged byNow, Hart says, he gets why so many people were upset with him.
“With the whole Oscars thing, there was a big gap between what I thought the problem was versus what the problem really was,” he told. “I got 10 years where I made sure not to joke or play in the way that I did back then because it was a problem. I don’t care if you’re gay or not gay. I’m a people person. I’m going to love you regardless.”
