‘I’d be more secure staying with him’: How the cost of living crisis impacts victims of abuse ⚫ In homes where there is an abuser the cost of living crisis has its own terrifying consequences

As well as making it harder for victim-survivors to leave abusive or controlling situations, it is also lending itself to an increase in instances of economic abuse within the relationship, says Women’s Aid. Two thirds have reported that their abusers are using rising costs as “a tool for coercive control, including to justify further restricting their access to money”.

Routinely, abusers draw up huge debt in the victim’s name – often through utility bills or failure to make mortgage repayments. This means long after the relationship has ended, victims are left paying off the abuser’s debt, and still being economically abused. In extreme cases, SEA has supported women who are facing home repossession, bankruptcy and poverty.

In this context, the excuse to withhold economic resources will always be available. The repercussions of restricting finances will be greater as money doesn’t travel as far. And victims will be forced to spend more time at home in order to reduce spending, where there is a greater chance of harm.
