‘Cod’ was a hit, now publishers are offering up all kinds of books on a single object—from sugar and coffee to rust, golf balls and umbrellas; ‘commodity fetishism’Elaine Khosrova was once asked to sample two dozen chunks of butter in one sitting. The result? A book idea.
“I was really struck by how different they were,” she said of the many butters she tried that day, while working as a magazine editor. Some were tangy while others were sweet, she recalled. Some were greasy; others were waxy. “It was like, ‘Wow, what’s going on here?’”
