“I am prouder of that choice and of my recovery than anything I’ve ever done,” Biden wrote, adding that he “chose life over the slow strangle-death grip of addiction.” While millions of Americans share similar experiences with addiction, Biden said his situation is unique because “I’m the son of the president of the United States” and said his “struggles and mistakes” are being weaponized for political gain.

Biden said the intense focus on him and his experiences with addiction have led to an “all-out annihilation” of his reputation through “high-pitched but fruitless congressional investigations,” a “vile and sustained disinformation campaign” against his father and unprecedented criminal charges for “possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days five years ago.

Biden said he accepts full responsibility for his actions but warned the constant “demonization” of his addiction “by partisan and craven factions” poses a genuine threat to people who want to get sober but are afraid of what might happen if they do, adding that “the avalanche of negativity and assault of my personal privacy” could make an already “near-impossible decision” even harder.
