Paul Townend let out a huge whoop of joy as he crossed the line I Am Maximus has secured victory at the 2024 Grand National following a thrilling race at Aintree on Saturday. Ridden by Paul Townend, I Am Maximus came out on top with odds of 7/1 to beat one of the favourites Corach Rambler, who unseated rider Derek Fox over the first fence before falling at the second to stun the Aintree crowd.
Delta Work finished as runner-up while Minella Indo took third place and the fourth and fifth spots were secured by Galvin and Kitty’s Light respectively. ‘What an unbelievable race and an unbelievable horse,’ Townend told ITV as he joined an elite group of jockeys to have won the Irish National, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National. ‘It is a bit surreal, to be honest. I ended up being first to the first and got to the Melling Road and he backed back.
