Jeneda Benally tells Newsweek about adopting what became the world's ugliest dog.

During Mr. Happy Face's adoption, I was told that he possibly had six weeks to live, so I believed that I would be giving him the last chapter of his life. But it has been over a year, and Mr. Happy Face is still thriving.Throughout my life, I learned about traditional Navajo bodywork and medicine from my father. My dad, who is 90 years old, and myself adjusted all of the bones in Mr. Happy Face's body. Before, he used to walk slowly, but he now runs after me.

I didn't go to win, and at the time, I thought that the idea was silly. But when I got there, it was fascinating to see all of the underdogs that existed. We enjoyed connecting with other people and watching unique dogs being presented. Later that day, it was announced that Mr. Happy Face was the champion for the world's ugliest dog.

Since winning The World's Ugliest Dog contest, Mr. Happy Face has gained a fanbase of people who follow his journey on, they often tell me that seeing Mr. Happy Face is the brightest part of their day. He has been using his social media platform to raise money for non-profit and grassroots animal rescue organizations.
