Hyundai recently detailed its new global strategy to transition to producing only Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs).

. However if you want the TL;DR, a SDV is a vehicle that uses software to power its major features and performance attributes, rather than simply using physical parts. Remember earlier when we said that in the future the definition of performance will extend past the mechanical? This is what we meant.A software-defined vehicle is akin to a smartphone. Every year Apple and Google release updates to the operating systems of smartphones.

While SDVs are relatively new to the automotive industry, Hyundai is certainly not the first to create one. Any Tesla sold within the last five years or so is an SDV. Tesla owners regularly receive new software-based features for their vehicles. Things like cabin overheat protection, battery calibration, andHyundai is working on its operating system for its future vehicles called"Connected Car Operating System" .

The automaker will also launch what it calls"Feature on Demand" services by 2023. According to Hyundai FoD will"give customers the ability to select and purchase functions and features that meet their needs and tastes, and the freedom to create vehicles that best match their lifestyles." If you're thinking that sounds a lot like a subscription service, you would be right. Pay-walled features in vehicles isn't new.

The eS platform will be a"skateboard-style" EV chassis produced exclusively for"purpose built" B2B vehicles. Think of vehicles made specifically for logistics, delivery, and ride-hailing businesses. Hyundai's future robotaxis will be built on the eS platform. In other words, expect the eS platform to be utilized when producing commercial vehicles.
