The prosecutor said: "It appears he had made a number of friends amongst the international students at the university and on December 13, 2023 it was the birthday of one of them. A party was planned – and the party was to commence very late on December 12 so that cake could be cut at midnight. Mr Jayasundera attended that party at Curzon House on Curzon Street, Nottingham. By around 3am a number decided they needed to leave.
