student during a car chase with police in the city centre is due to be sentenced. Joshua Gregory pleaded guilty to causing the death of Oshada Jayasudera when the Ford Focus ST he was behind the wheel of struck his victim on the A60 Huntingdon Street in the early hours of Wednesday, December 13, last year.was being pursued by Nottinghamshire police officers and the force has since referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in relation to the chase.
"The Focus now accelerated rapidly as it entered onto Huntingdon Street from Lower Parliament Street. The recording of the pursuit shows that the police car reached 78mph in this 30mph zone. At that point the police car was some 450m away from the collision site. The Focus was virtually at the collision site and was pulling away.
The prosecutor said: "It appears he had made a number of friends amongst the international students at the university and on December 13, 2023 it was the birthday of one of them. A party was planned – and the party was to commence very late on December 12 so that cake could be cut at midnight. Mr Jayasundera attended that party at Curzon House on Curzon Street, Nottingham. By around 3am a number decided they needed to leave.
