After a difficult season on and off the court, Hunter Cattoor and the Hokies are set for a fresh start.

Virginia Tech guard Hunter Cattoor, who was named the ACC tournament most outstanding player in 2022, is back for a graduate season. CHARLOTTE — The most trying time of Hunter Cattoor’s life began early last November when the Virginia Tech guard learned his father, Rodney, had been diagnosed with cancer. In the aftermath of the jarring news, Cattoor spent countless hours in Coach Mike Young’s office, where he often found comfort in their conversations.

One year later, his father remains cancer-free, Cattoor happily revealed this week during ACC men’s basketball media day. Cattoor’s elbow has healed fully as well, all of which has the 6-foot-3 graduate guard even more energized to start a season of redemption after the Hokies missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since Young’s arrival in April 2019.

Cattoor averaged 10.8 points, the fourth most on the team in 2022-23 and second behind Pedulla among players who are back this season.
