Heritage Open Days will see thousands of historic venues open to the public for free
Heritage Open Days are England's largest community-led festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. Founded in 1994 the open days aim to bring people together to celebrate heritage, community, and history.
Running from September 8 to September 17, more than 5,000 events and buildings will be open to the public for free. In Merseyside alone, there are more than 150 building opening their doors for free - and below we have listed five you do not want to miss.Birkenhead Priory and St Mary's Tower The oldest standing building on Merseyside, the Priory offers a unique insight into Birkenhead. The first ferry across the Mersey operated here from 1150 to 1536. St Mary’s Tower offers spectacular views across to Liverpool, along the river, of Cammell Laird’s shipyards and also the surrounding area.
An opportunity to explore The Old Dock at Liverpool ONE, in partnership with National Museums Liverpool as part of Open Heritage Days. The Old Dock is the world's first commercial enclosed wet dock, a historic location revealed in 2001 during the excavations to create Liverpool ONE.
