EXCLUSIVE: The First Minister said people with disabilities feared they would be the “thin end of the wedge” if the proposals became law.

Humza Yousaf has said his opposition to assisted dying plans has hardened after talks with disability campaigners.

Similar plans have failed to become law in the past, but supporters are confident the Bill has a chance of succeeding this time. “I went to meet with [chief executive] Tressa Burke and a whole group of individuals, people with disabilities, and they were incredibly strong in their opposition to assisted dying, given that they felt that they would be the ones, as they described it, that would be the thin end of the wedge when it came to assisted dying.”

Scottish Labour Anas Sarwar has voiced similar concerns about the impact on people with disabilities: However, former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said in April she is “more open” to assisted dying legislation than in the past.
