Humza Yousaf has offered to work with Keir Starmer if he becomes Prime Minister to scrap the “cruel” two child benefits cap.

The First Minister said his MPs “stand ready” to assist and claimed Labour’s opposition to axing the policy is a “massive betrayal”.

“To say reversing this policy can’t be done because of the economic situation is frankly an insult to people’s intelligence. “Rather than taking money away from children in low-income households as the UK Government are doing, we’re finding the money to provide badly-needed additional support.A Labour source said: “This is a shameless attempt by Humza Yousaf to deflect from his own government’s woeful record on child poverty.

Research commissioned by the SNP found that the benefit cap affected more than 80,000 children in Scotland in the last year.
