Kevin Williams braces himself while on a stand-up paddleboard as an adult humpback whale approaches him in the waters near Whittier on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
“But then it went under for quite a long time. And then all of a sudden it surfaces right in front of me. And it’s coming towards me sort of like a submarine,” Williams said in an interview Wednesday.Williams said he dropped to his knees for stability. He was terrified. The whale was clearly immense, he said.
His other son, Erik Williams, later shared a photo of the encounter on social media, showing the whale’s giant fin rising directly in front of Kevin Williams’ board.
