“I have a completely new perspective on life, on relationships, on conversations, on mental health as a whole, on trauma, on grief.”Smith said April 6, 2018 started as just another regular day. The Broncos were in the midst of a heated playoff series against the rival Nipawin Hawks, and were on the way to another massive game.
Smith suffered a stroke as a result of the collision. He also had a punctured lung, two broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and a broken collarbone which needed surgery and led to severe nerve damage in his left arm. Six inches of his small intestine also had to be removed. After being discharged from the hospital, Smith said, he ended up in an almost monotonous routine of physical therapy and attempting to keep busy, without properly addressing the mental side of his recovery.Those around him knew that he was in severe pain, but he kept his guard up, remained pleasant and told everyone he was OK. Instead, he said last week, “I consumed myself with the survivor’s guilt. I consumed myself with these unanswerable questions.
“The only thing I thought about were those 16 families, those 16 families who forever have an empty seat at the dinner table.”
