Several human rights groups have called for the sponsors of the upcoming WorldCup in Qatar to provide “compensation and other remedies to migrant workers”. More from jwhitey98 and GarrickOmar
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and FairSquare argue the redress is needed due to “death or injury, wage theft, and debt from illegal recruitment fees while preparing the tournament”.Four sponsors have subsequently stated their support for compensation, with another 10 offering no public comment.
The human rights groups contacted FIFA’s 14 corporate partners and sponsors, asking them to pressure FIFA to remedy the alleged abuses. “With only two months until the first ball is kicked, sponsors should use their considerable leverage to press FIFA and Qatar to fulfill their human rights responsibilities to these workers.“With sixty days to go, after a decade of worker reform, there are still workers returning without the pay owed to them. Those who built the World Cup are still experiencing human rights abuses.”
