Kasari Govender says concerns about the presence of police officers in schools have been raised by marginalized students, their families and their communities
The chairman of the Sooke School Board says he’s surprised at a letter from the B.C. human rights commissioner calling for an end to school-liaison officers at all B.C. schools until the need for them can be proven.
While there is little Canadian research about how the students are affected by them, she says American studies have shown the officers can contribute to a sense of criminalization and surveillance in schools. The Victoria Police Department cancelled its school-liaison officer program in 2018 while it was dealing with an ongoing staff shortage.
“My intention has always been, and still continues to be, to — once we’re able to hire as many officers as we need — restore the school-liaison program.”With respect to Govender’s letter, the police chief said it’s healthy to have the discussion. “It’s important to bring all sides to the table and to hear what the concerns are.”
