The machine has the potential to increase the number of livers available for transplant.
Intriguingly, the machine could allow for the repair of poor-quality livers that would otherwise be declined for transplantation. When placed in the device for a a few days, these livers may regain full function.
"The success of this unique perfusion system—developed over a four-year period by a group of surgeons, biologists and engineers—paves the way for many new applications in transplantation and cancer medicine helping patients with no liver grafts available," Pierre-Alain Clavien, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Transplantation at the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, said in a statement.

According to the researchers, the next step in the development of the machine will be to use the livers which recovered full function for real transplants.
