This eight-part WW II thriller, which begins streaming on Hulu on June 17, has a Luxembourger as its star , several French actors, a couple of Brits and Americans , and a passel of Germans. The languages are French, German, and English, and it is based on the celebrated German submarine film from 1981, a movie I remember my parents raving about and which I found incomprehensibly slow .
What follows—I’ve watched a little more than half the season—is an elegantly entertaining wartime suspense story. The narrative shifts between the confines of the submarine, a knife-thin envelope of steel that keeps the men on top of each other , and La Rochelle, where Simone is drawn into a shadowy espionage plot against the Nazis.
