The Hulk and this DC character share trauma.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Hulk shares a terrible secret with one DC hero — and fans will never guess who it is. One of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, the Hulk is a raging brute driven by anger and rage. It has been revealed that Bruce Banner’s Hulk persona is the embodiment of a lifetime of abuse and bullying. Surprisingly, in 1986’s Secret Origins #4 from DC Comics, fans learn that the superhero Firestorm shares a similar background.
Secret Origins #4 by Gerry Conway, George Tuska, Pablo Marcos, Nansi Hoolahan, John Costanza, and Carrie Spiegle retells Firestorm’s origin for the modern DC Universe. Professor Stein, one half of Firestorm reflects on his life as an undergraduate at Stanford University. Readers learn that Stein was bullied by his more athletic peers; one in particular wanted Stein to give him answers to a test. Stein gave him the wrong answers, leading to a beat down on the campus quad.
Firestorm’s motivations are tragic, however. Professor Stein was bullied relentlessly by his classmates, and the trauma from this led to difficulty maintaining relationships and a drinking problem. Stein rose above his vices, but the trauma from the bullying remains as a motivating force for Firestorm. Much like Martin Stein, Bruce Banner, too, was bullied as a child. Banner was beaten by his father, and the years of steady abuse took a toll on Bruce’s psyche.
Firestorm and the Hulk Have Truly Similar Origins Yet where Firestorm and the Hulk differ is how they process this trauma. Secret Origins #4 make it clear that, while Stein will always be haunted by the bully, he has moved on and now seeks friendship. Firestorm has become a positive force for good in the DC Universe, whereas the Hulk is continually hunted and hounded by the world. These two heroes share an unlikely connection, however, united by trauma and abuse.
