A report published in November by the National Foundation for Educational Research found that almost two-thirds of schools struggling with teacher shortages were forced to call in non-specialist teachers to lead maths lessons last year, in a move that has impacted learning. “[It] will now be almost impossible to face the electorate at a [general election] and expect voters to believe or trust our manifesto commitments.”
Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association , said it was “shocking” that Mr Sunak delivered a speech about boosting the economy on Wednesday without any mention of childcare.
