Huawei has launched its latest Nova 13 series in South Africa, featuring improved screens, camera systems, and a focus on AI integration. The Nova 13 and Nova 13i offer competitive pricing and aim to appeal to a wide range of users.
2025 is shaping up to be a year dominated by artificial intelligence (AI) in the smartphone market. With January coming to a close, several smartphone launches have already taken place as tech companies race to introduce their latest devices globally, including in South Africa . It's believed that these brands are aiming to get their products to market before their respective financial year-ends.
Companies like Samsung, Honor, and Vivo have already unveiled their newest smartphones, while others like Xiaomi are keeping their upcoming releases under wraps. As predicted by tech experts at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas during January, 2025 will see a significant emphasis on AI integration in smartphones. Following this trend, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has also launched its latest mid-range Nova series, which made its global debut in December. Unveiled at the Leonardo Hotel in Sandton on Thursday, the Nova 13 series boasts improved screens, enhanced camera systems, and, of course, the integration of AI. While Huawei showcased the Nova 13 Pro in Dubai, South Africa will only receive the base Nova 13 and Nova 13i models. The Nova 13, available in Loden Green and Black, starts at R 12,999, and the Nova 13i, available in Blue and White, starts at R 6,999. This pricing strategy positions Huawei within a similar range as its former subsidiary, Honor, which recently launched the Honor X9c, marketed as the “unbreakable AI smartphone”.Despite ongoing US sanctions against Huawei and the absence of the Google Play Store on their devices, Huawei continues to innovate and remains a leading brand in wearable technology. They also hold a strong position in the mobile and computer categories within South Africa. Embracing the AI trend, the Huawei Nova 13 features the AI Best Expression function. Utilizing advanced algorithms, this feature identifies the most flattering expressions for each individual in a captured image, ensuring smiles are perfect, eyes are open, and everyone appears their best. The result is a natural final image that eliminates common issues like awkward smiles or closed eyes, making it ideal for capturing spontaneous photos with celebrities, sports stars, and other notable individuals. Further expanding its ecosystem, Huawei also introduced the MatePad 11.5 to the South African market, designed to revolutionize paperless productivity. With anticipated launches still to come from Samsung's mid-range series, Apple iPhones later this year, and Oppo, among others, South African consumers will have an abundance of smartphone choices to suit their individual needs and budgets
