would have to slow down by around 100mph and could cause a logjam for services across the north if the project is axed at Birmingham, experts have warned.Phase 2a and Phase 2b of the high-speed rail project which would take it to Crewe and then onto Manchester due to escalating costs.
The bullet-style trains will be capable of travelling up to 225mph, cutting the journey time between London and Birmingham from one hour 22 minutes to around 50 minutes. He added: “The backsliding on yet more vital HS2 infrastructure is the inevitable result of politicians and the accountants in the Treasury completely mis-selling its purpose.
Having HS2 trains running on existing track north of Birmingham was envisaged in earlier plans for HS2, when it was thought there would be a delay of up to seven years before Phase 2 would be up and running. The Government continues to deny that a final decision has been made on HS2, although a photo leaked to The Independent last week suggested shelving the Manchester phase could save £35bn.
