Vilalta received a joint commission from the governments of Canada and Taiwan to create a piece of theatre that could be presented in intimate, found spaces. He originally wanted to adapt something by Edgar Allan Poe, but, suffering from writer’s block, Vilalta remembered the equally macabre books and stories of Uruguayan playwright Horacio Quiroga.
It wasn’t a story by Quiroga that Vilalta settled on, but a story about the death of the writer’s first wife, Ana Maria Cires.Article content “Ana died under very mysterious circumstances.
