Kaitlyn Urenda-Culpepper was 27 when she lost her mom, Genevieve Martinez, to COVID in July 2020. At one point, Kaitlyn’s mother, aunt, and grandmother were all hospitalized simultaneously as a result of the virus. “Our family always lived like a village, helping each other,” Kaitlyn says. “And then everyone got COVID and it was like the village was on fire.” Everyone survived except Genevieve, a nurse of 40 years, who died at the age of 62.
Before Genevieve Martinez died, she spent the holidays surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Even though she wasn’t very artsy, Kaitlyn remembers her mother starting every holiday season determined to make advent wreaths for every family member . Genevieve baked homemade candy and cooked constantly in preparation fora Latinx tradition. “I miss those things a lot. I wish I had paid more attention or written down recipes,” Kaitlyn says.
