The phenomenon will produce up to 120 meteors per hour.

Traveling inland or to less populated areas could be another option for Bay Area observers to avoid any unnecessary light pollution.

“There are a few spots in the East Bay hills that I like to call ‘dark sky oasis,’ where you can juuust barely make out the Milky Way on a good night,” David Prosper, a night sky network administrator with thein San Francisco, told SFGATE in an email. “And of course, super bright meteors will still show up regardless of if the Moon is out, but are relatively few in number.”

The meteors are best seen from the naked eye; a telescope or binoculars are not needed and will limit your visibility of the shower. These tools could come in handy, though, if you want to check out Mars, which can also be seen on Tuesday night and will look like “a bright orange dot that doesn’t flicker like a star,” said Burress.

Otherwise, all you need is a lawn chair, warm, comfortable clothing and your hot beverage of choice. The Chabot Space and Science Center plans to hoststarting at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, and stargazers will be able view the meteor shower from Chabot’s observatory plaza if the weather permits. A short presentation about the phenomenon, including photos of 3200 Phaethon taken by the center’s 36-inch telescope, will be part of the festivities.
