‘Recent studies suggest the conventional advice of abstaining for a few days in between is perhaps wrong, and that sperm performance may improve with regular, even daily, intercourse. This way, no matter when ovulation occurs, there will be sperm available to fertilise the egg. Be spontaneous and remember to enjoy sex – orgasming may be helpful in aiding fertilisation, too. But whatever method you use, don’t become obsessive over it.

‘So, what should you avoid? Trans fats , red or processed meats, fast food and sugary drinks have all been linked with a reduced chance of conception. In a 2018 study looking at the pre-conception diets of more than 5,600 women, those eating fruit three or more times a day took less time to conceive than non-fruit-eaters.

‘Many of us haven’t got a clue what our cycle is like until we start trying for a baby, but if you’re thinking about trying to conceive and you’re not on hormonal contraception, there’s no reason not to start monitoring it in advance. Using an app can help with tracking: my favourites are Natural Cycles and Flo Period.
