The other side of grief
01/05/2020Thirteen years ago, if someone had told me one day I’d be laughing at daft memories of my dad, or able to talk about him without crying, or forget how he looked when he was dying at the end, I’d have told them they were insane.If I said his name, I broke down.
Now, it’s all been brought home to me again as a close friend has just lost her mother to cancer. She’s now in the place I was back then – in the dark, crying, unable to say the word ‘Mum.’ Of course, right now, she’s looking at me as if I’m mad. She can’t see a future without heaving sobbing fits and the dark despair. She can only remember the past couple of weeks and how traumatic it’s all been.
Of course now when I see my friend and tell her one day she’ll say her mum’s name easily and lightly; that she’ll look at pictures and smile and laugh at funny memories, she gives me a stare that says I’m crazy, just as I did years ago.
