How to design a successful app, according to a UX designer who's worked on them for startups like Gorillas

Felix Haas, 24, is one of the most sought-after UX designers on the Berlin tech scene, having helped develop the app for the startup Gorillas, which grew toHaas got his start in the industry after founding a company when he was 18. He managed to raise 120,000 euros from angel investors for his company — Skip App, a portal where users could share photos — but his venture only lasted a year and a half as it struggled to compete in the market.

Haas joined German startup Mapify a year after it was founded in 2016. The startup tasked him with developing an app for its market launch. The platform enables users to explore different locations and plan and book trips. He added that developers shouldn't wait too long to release an app, even if it doesn't do a lot, as user feedback allows companies to learn and constantly improve it.Haas left Mapify to move to the fast-growing delivery startup Gorillas, where he said he worked closely with Kagan Sümer, the startup's founder, and Ronny Shibley, the startup's cofounder and CTO.

"We gave users the ability to add relevant products virtually anywhere. Even in the final step, when you have to enter the delivery address and payment information, we asked people if they wanted oatmeal because they had added milk to their cart, for example," Haas said. "It's important to identify users early on and find out exactly what they need," Haas continued, adding that users should be able to work the app intuitively. He said one way to achieve that is to use design patterns from other successful apps.
