But an initiative dedicated to helping the children of migrant farmworkers stay on track connected her with upperclassmen and successful alumni who helped nurture a sense of belonging for her. Briseño now oversees the program that is celebrating its 50th year. That support, as well as knowing that tuition is covered for up to five years, helped Justin Treviño feel empowered about pursuing his passion and a degree. He’s among 34 students participating in CAMP at St. Edward’s this year.
At St. Edward’s CAMP, first-year retention rates have been at about 91% in recent years, and the six-year graduation rate for those who started as freshmen in 2015 reached 60%, according to university data. The U.S. Department of Education covers about 7% of St. Edward’s annual $5.9 million budget for the program. The Catholic university makes up the rest through private funders.
