Instead of the usual T-shirt and medal, this race series is hanging out swag from local businesses to virtual race finishers.

and t-shirts to finishers, iTri-365 is replacing those swag staples with items purchased from local businesses in east Texas.

For the month of May, the first month of the virtual racing, the theme for the swag bag is self-care. So far, organizers have teamed up with a candle shop to supply handcrafted candles for runners, a local art shop to create posters, and a local shipping business that will handle shipping these items out to racers, in addition to supplying an item for racers.

“We didn’t want to spend all of the money [from entry fees] on one item; we wanted to spread it around to multiple businesses,” Bryans said. “We tried thinking about how easily things ship, how heavy they are, can they withstand the Texas heat when summer arrives, and making sure everything is local. People would, designed for any speed and any distance.]The theme will change every month, and the June swag is expected to be food-related.

“We wanted to keep [the entry fee] reasonably inexpensive for people [$30] because so many are going through their own growing pains right now,” Bryans said. “But people want to help their communities and businesses right now, and just for the first race month, we’ve been able to put $2,000 back into the local economy with our swag purchases and using local shipping.”

Runners who signed up have the entire month to complete the 30 miles. Though it is unclear when restrictions to slow the spread of coronavirus will be lifted, iTri-365 is planning to host the virtual races at least through August 31.Drew covers a variety of subjects for Runner’s World and Bicycling, and he specializes in writing and editing human interest pieces while also covering health, wellness, gear, and fitness for the brand.
