As a little girl, the 'Rosca de Reyes' pulled me in with its deliciousness. As a mom, I'm taken by its meaning, tradition and all it represents on Three Kings Day.

As a little girl growing up in Miami, I knew the holidays weren’t over until I had a delicious slice of— a sweet bread that’s eaten on Three Kings Day and is similar to King’s Cake.sweet tooth which means once Christmas passed ... well, I was counting the days till Jan. 6.

This year, I learned the tradition originated in Spain and later made its way to Mexico, South America and other areas. I also learned the colorful candied fruit on the Rosca symbolizes the gifts given to baby Jesus by the Three Kings, and that the plastic baby Jesus hidden in the bread represents the biblical story of Mary and Joseph hiding their son to save Him from Herod.

I put some gloves on and got to work. We rolled dough, hid plastic baby Jesuses, and sprinkled sugar everywhere. We talked about our kids — they’re the same ages and attend nearby schools — about our heritages — she was born in Puebla, Mexico, and I in Miami to a Nicaraguan mother and Spanish father — and even talked about our dreams.

Bread-making, she tells me, is a long and tedious process, which is why she’s been up since 3 a.m. toiling away in the cramped but cozy kitchen of her apartment fulfilling Rosca orders.
