Responding to the COVID-19 crisis, brother and sister entrepreneurs, Francisco Tirado and Laura Tirado, are rapidly delivering food and essential items to people across Puerto Rico through their respective startups, PRoduce and UVA. Here's how they're doing it.
, has been selling produce to PRoduce regularly since 2018. Spreading across 100 acres, the farm harvests 30-35 crops. Since the COVID-19 lockdown began on the island on March 15, the farm’s orders have increased three-fold. In other words, the amount he used to sell in a month, he’s now selling per week. Regarding the role of farmers, Francisco Tirado said: “If there’s a situation where we can’t import food Puerto Rico will collapse.
Due to the increase in demand, Laura and her team decided to launch a second product—another UVA—that delivers products to large companies. Through a partnership with one of the world’s largest international phone carriers UVA is delivering phones, tablets, and all the equipment people are subscribing to during the pandemic.
To do this, Laura says she had to “double down” on everything, or “double up,” I should say. Growing from a six person company to 18, she hired a second customer service team, someone to handle claims, and put more resources into sales because UVA began expanding to regions outside of San Juan so rapidly. The company has been recruiting 30 drivers daily.
