Former ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa and national executive committee coordinator Andries Nel helped diffuse an intractable dispute that threatened to derail the eThekwini regional conference, which later elected Zandile Gumede as the chairperson.

The conference last weekend was delayed by a day, caused mainly by the issue of the status of eThekwini regional task team members and whether they would be allowed to vote.
