Longtime host JeffProbst on the messy, thrilling endurance of Survivor: “The show is of-the-moment every season. If you look back at our early seasons, you may cringe—but that is who we were.”
podcast, invited 12 Black alums representing two decades’ worth of gameplay on his show in July 2020, for a complex discussion on the harmful stereotypes, lack of diversity, and racist encounters they experienced as part of the show. “We can’t swim…we butt heads, we’re athletic, but maybe not smart and strategic,” as first-season contestantreturned for season 41 last fall with, inarguably, one of its most diverse casts—multiple players were also LGBTQ+—as well as one of its most dynamic.
“We sat down and redesigned the entire game from top to bottom, [and] I don’t really examine what worked and didn’t work,” Probst says. “I get letters from kids all the time, and they’re amazing because they will say, ‘Hi, my name is Danny. I’m your biggest fan. Here are all the problems with the show.’ I always joke, if I put a whiteboard of all the things that people hated, there would be nothing left because there’s somebody who hates every single element of the show.
Probst had long been mulling some of the controversial new additions, like the “change history” merge twist—which gives one seemingly unlucky player the chance to reverse the outcome of a challenge . And anyway, coming off of season 40—which was an all-winners extravaganza—the executive producer knew a new era was afoot, pandemic or not. “Ultimatelyis about adaptation,” he says. “Anytime you’re designing a new season, you have to accept the possibility that your ideas may fail.
