This adds up to 200 instructional days.
Previously, inland schools started in the second week of January, with coastal schools following in the third week. National Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said this was done to minimise traffic congestion on roads. The Department of Basic Education has added three special holidays in 2025 due to the Public Holidays Act.
These fall on 29, 30 April and 2 May, with Worker’s Day on 1 May, effectively creating a full week of school holidays.Good Friday , Family Day , Freedom Day , Workers’ Day , Youth Day
