The Bill, which aims to speed up the removal of migrants arriving in the UK via small boats, is set to be debated in the Commons next week.
It will mark a significant departure from current legislation, which grants all asylum seekers the right to remain in Britain to have their case heard.MPs on the right of the party had warned the Government that the Bill did not go far enough to prevent legal challenges to deportations, with manyin order to push through tighter border controls.
Dozens of Tory MPs were set to rebel on the legislation and as such, ringleaders have taken part in talks with Rishi Sunak, his deputy chief of staff, Will Tanner, immigration ministerBut centrist Tory MPs are calling for the Government to establish more safe and legal routes through which asylum seekers can reach the UK, as well as adding protections for victims of modern slavery and human trafficking.
Under the plans, the Government would be able to ignore injunctions made by the European Court of Human Rights – known asFurther amendments will state that the only way to stop deportations is by persuading a British judge that it would lead to “serious and irreversible harm”.
