PSG have been in FFP trouble lately but are still spending and, for now, have retained Mbappe - this is their financial situation explained
How does it all add up?
It’s worth noting the rule changes made to UEFA’s financial monitoring. UEFA are shifting away from FFP and towards a system called FSR — football sustainability regulations. Those will limit the amount a club can spend on salaries, transfer amortisations and agent commissions to 70 per cent of revenue. FSR will be introduced progressively: 90 per cent of revenue in 2023-24, 80 per cent the following season, reaching 70 per cent for 2025-26.
Yet in the short term, PSG still need to hit the targets of their settlement agreement with UEFA, and also bring down their squad costs so they do not exceed 90 per cent of their revenue for this season. Assessing an FFP position can be tricky, due to the limited publicly available, up-to-date information. For the accounts covering the season before last as reported by the DNCG , the challenge for PSG is evident.
In 2021-22, PSG’s revenue was €669.6m, while their payroll alone was €730m. That means the fee is broken down into smaller chunks, and spread out over the length of a player’s contract. So a €200m outlay paid for across five years actually adds about €40m to the books annually.
